Introduction – Convenience Stores Statistics
The first modern convenience store chain was created in 1921 in Dallas, Texas, United States. Each store is a small retail business that stocks a variety of everyday items such as quick pick-up and-go meals, snacks, beverages, produce, tobacco products, publications like newspapers and magazines, toiletries, over-the-counter drugs, etc.
There are over 150,000 convenience stores alone in the United States. Most of them are independently owned and many of them are featured as part of a gas station setup. They contribute nearly $650 million US dollars of business to the economy in 2021.
Here are the top chains in the United States based on the number of stores:
| 2021 Rank | Brand | Number of Stores | 2020 Rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7-Eleven Inc. | 13,000 | 1 |
| 2 | Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. | 7,103 | 2 |
| 3 | Casey’s General Stores Inc. | 2,422 | 4 |
| 4 | EG America LLC | 1,750 | 5 |

As discussed in the insight piece, tobacco, fuel, and food sale are on the decline due to changing consumer tastes. It means forward-thinking store owners have to rethink how to deploy their assets for other revenue streams before it is too late.
